As if being a KPop idol wasn’t stressful enough, imagine having to put on a perfect performance while fighting off demons. One sour note could put the fate of the world in jeopardy. It’s a good thing the girls in Netflix’s new original film KPop Demon Hunters seem to have it under control.
Netflix recently released the trailer for KPop Demon Hunters, and it’s got everything a KPop fan could want. There are extravagant concerts with dramatic lighting, choreography, cool light stick designs, and music! Original music was produced for this movie and the lead single Takedown will be released in June, slightly before the moviewhich releases on June 20th, 2025. It makes sense to release the song to get some hype going, everyone loves a movie they can sing to.
From the trailer it looks like the main characters Rumi, Zoey, and Mira are tasked with becoming demon hunters and they’re naturals. In order to compete, the demons have to try and beat them at their own game by creating a competing boy band to steal souls of their fans. Fans are very dedicated to their favorite KPop band. I think it’s a fun concept and I’m excited to see how this battle of the KPop bands goes down. Can the girls make fighting demons on stage look like an elaborate stage performance?
Speaking of looks, KPop Demon Hunters looks fabulous! The hair, clothing, costumes all scream KPop even if I knew nothing else about the movie and was shown just stills, I could guess what it was about. The girls sort of have a KDA vibe I think a lot of fans are excited to see brought to life. If this does well and reaches the right audience, the cosplay is going to be legendary, especially the work that would go into the wigs. I apricate that even in their demon hunting gear the girls look great, and the sense of fashion doesn’t get downgraded when the action starts. I especially like that from the trailer it looks like the girls’ battle montage includes a skincare routine which is super cute. Being a warrior doesn’t mean they have to be macho.
The animation for the movie was done by Sony Pictures Imageworks who also animated Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse. I think they nailed the lighting from the dynamic lights of the stage to the delicate beams of light dancing off the girls’ weapons. I also have to draw attention to some of the facial expressions in the trailer, they’re funny and overdramatic, and I love them. There’s something about these characters that are already charming and compelling. Their personalities shine from the trailer alone.
I’m very excited to see KPop Demon Hunters when it releases on June 20th!
