Chiikawa is going on vacation! He deserves the chance to rest and relax with all the obstacles he has to overcome daily. It’s time for Chiikawa to wipe his tears and enjoy a nap on the beach in the warm sunshine. Too bad the monster hunting never stops. Chiikawa and friends get swept up by more than the tide in their newest adventure.
The trailer for Chiikawa the movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island is now available on YouTube. Chiikawa finds a flyer for the island of Shima advertising hunting rewards better than the regular offers. The flyer also advertises special island ramen, and I think that would get me too. It seems like a great opportunity for the group to take a breather from their normal monster encounters. The first part of the trailer is adorable as the group receives cute new outfits for the film. I’m expecting to see summertime Chiikawa merch everywhere after this film premieres on July 24th, at least in Japan to start. I’m confident Miniso will eventually have good merch from this movie. Tote bags with Chiikawa in his island look would be so cute for the beach. Slowly, the serene island vibes take on a more menacing tone. Chiikawa must abandon his parfait. As always, the food looks delicious, and I know it’s going to make me want something sweet after watching. His little paws have to grasp his weapon tightly to take on the mermaid-like monster that’s terrorizing the island. Hopefully, he doesn’t end up as a tasty snack.
I’m personally excited to see a whole Chiikawa arc make it to the big screen, especially with the normal formula for a Chiikawa episode. Each episode is cut into several different short scenarios. Some throughlines connect the overall series, like Chiikawa training for the hunting license. I feel, though, that you can watch any Chiikawa episode and enjoy the story without feeling like you’re missing anything. A fully connected arc feels exciting and like a good time for character growth. The movie’s cast goes beyond the big three of Chiikawa, Hachiware, and Usagi, if the character has a name and an original look, they’re in the film. I’m interested in seeing how the story will incorporate all these roles together. With short episodes, it feels like one or two characters get attention during the runtime. How will all these characters factor into the story? This new mermaid foe looks large, but may not be as dangerous as the islanders make them out to be. I feel like there’s a mystery going on that Chiikawa is going to have to be brave to solve.
Cygames Pictures is the studio behind Chiikawa the movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island. After the Umamusume: Pretty Derby Beginning of a New Era film, I’m wondering how pretty they can make Chiikawa scenes. I’m also hopeful they’re able to get this film distributed to US theaters. I would love to see what kind of popcorn bucket Chiikawa would inspire. If you could eat any sweet treat right now, what would it be?
