Technology is advancing fast, and AI has become the buzzword of the year, seemingly exploding in popularity overnight. It started as a helpful tool, but it’s slowly losing that purpose. AI typically responds to users in a friendly human way, which has caused some users to start casual conversations with it. These casual conversations have become less casual and normalized frighteningly fast. Some governments are getting involved with this growing trend of digital love.
China has banned AI chatbots from having flirtatious behaviors that entice humans to start romantic relationships with them. This affected current AI companions from companies such as ByteDance, Tencent, and Alibaba. As heartbreaking as it must have been for some users, the Chinese government sees the ban as a start to a brighter future for citizens. Becoming massively dependent on an AI chatbot could cause other negative psychological effects on users down the road as their social skills are affected. It’s not good to be tied to something that’s programmed to agree with you all the time. With this new law, all chatbots must be deemed safe by the government and can be terminated if they do not pass their safety qualifications. Something as simple as replying to a user with too much emotion could be grounds for an AI chatbot’s deactivation. This new ban isn’t just about the mental health of Chinese citizens; it’s also a response to the declining birth rate.
Citizens are finding it easier to relate and fall in love with these AI chatbots instead of real humans. There are plenty of inspiring stories of the internet bringing people together, but there are also users who become isolated on the web, hindering their socialization skills. Connecting with an AI chatbot may feel less stressful, as there is no chance for rejection or embarrassment. It’s not just the chronically online that fall for chatbots. There have been cases of real-life relationships being destroyed by AI chatbots. During fights or times of struggle, one person may secretly turn to an AI chatbot who says all the right things. People have left seemingly happy marriages for an AI chatbot.
Falling for a fantasy isn’t a completely new concept. For years, fans have been falling in love with characters from anime and games. There is a whole gaming genre that revolves around winning the hearts of fictional characters and asking them on dates. Fans of these games tend to stick to the online communities around these specific topics and keep their love private. For a while, it was seen as strange. Fans have had elaborate symbolic marriages to some of these characters. The most popular public marriage might be between a man named Akihiko Kondo and Hatsune Miku. People still think it’s odd. People will do couple live streams with their AI chatbots. Others have gone to the news about their love story with their AI chatbot; it’s become mainstream and normalized seemingly fast.
AI has received backlash for being detrimental to the environment, for stopping people from using their critical thinking skills, and for hurting creative industries it shouldn’t be a part of. Now is the time to put policies in place to make sure AI can’t grow more out of control. I don’t think AI should replace any companionship.
