The Mysterious Thief Forget Me Not (Demo) – Theiving Theatrics

Enjoy museum exhibits up close, hold priceless jewels in the palm of your hands, but hold them close. You wouldn’t want them slipping from your grasp and tumbling to the street below as you run from the police. Live the double life of the famous art thief, Forget Me Not, Desirée during her day job as a florist. Steal the prettiest jewels and win the prettiest heart along the way. I played the demo for The Mysterious Thief; Forget Me Not by solarProtag for the Fall in Love visual novel festival on Steam.

Dazzle fans and enrage local detectives, turning grand thievery into a performance with taunting messages and flashy spectacles. As much as the local police and one museum curator want to see Desirée behind bars, the public has grown fond of the eccentric thief, Forget Me Not. Some even cosplay the masked criminal, making their daring escapes even easier. I enjoyed how theatrical the heist sequences were, with flash bangs and a sea of falling feathers distracting the crowd from the real show. Desirée breaks the law, but players aren’t playing as a bad person. In fact, she returns everything she steals after holding it hostage for a short while. Just long enough to rile everyone up. To me, it seems like she’s more of an adrenaline junkie than someone who’s looking to strike it rich. She had the chance to when I was playing, though, as I nearly forgot to place the jewel in the mailbox. It’s mostly because I couldn’t find it; I’m personally used to blue mailboxes.

The Mysterious Thief; Forget Me Not utilises point-and-click mechanics to move parts of the story from point A to point B. I think it helps immerse the player and get them invested in the main character. Players can explore areas by clicking on certain items to hear Desirée’s internal thoughts. All items build the world in some way, either getting Desirée to talk about her personal backstory, the backstory of another character, or giving the scene more detail. My favorite part of the demo was solving a puzzle. During the second heist, the player must deduce who has the jewel Forget Me Not is there to steal. This is done by choosing characters and listening in on their conversations. The game automatically takes notes that the player can look back on and make a final deduction. I personally think the first puzzle is easy for plot reasons, but I hope there are more in the full game that get more challenging.

A good mysterious thief leaves an impression, stealing more than diamonds; they typically also take a heart or two. Desirée sweeps the gentle Irina off her feet. The Mysterious Thief; Forget Me Not has a romantic yuri plot, but it’s not a traditional dating visual novel. There are no multiple love interests to choose from. Desirée falls in love at first sight with Irina, and they have two meet-cutes. One in the theater and the second during the heist. I want to see the story unfold between the two. Will Desirée share her secret by choice, or will she be forced to confess?

The Mysterious Thief; Forget Me Not is a thrilling yuri romance visual novel that has unique gameplay elements. The art is adorable, especially the scene where Desirée sees Irina for the first time. I could see the crush starting in real time, and it melted my heart. Pick up The Mysterious Thief; Forget Me Not and put on a show that fans and detectives alike will never forget. Just remember to return all priceless items after the theatrics are done. You can pick up the game on Steam here: The Mysterious Thief; Forget Me Not. Grab it while it’s on sale during the Fall in Love Festival!
