Archive of Our Own is a large online library that holds years of beloved fanfiction as well as original works. It’s a place for aspiring writers to proudly showcase their own stories. AO3 is the perfect alternative to doomscrolling at 2 a.m. Instead of stressing you can read a heartbreaking slow-burn through misty eyes. I’ve read some devastating stories on AO3. The internet is in shambles this week as Archive of Our Own goes on a historic maintenance.

A03 went down for unscheduled maintenance for what was originally 12 hours. A much longer-than-normal maintenance. It caused mild panic, but readers twiddled their thumbs, sure the site would return after a long day of work. Now fandoms are in shambles as AO3 reveals the maintenance could take 2- 4 weeks before the site returns. Tumblr saw a revitalizing spike in users as readers ran to spread the news like wildfire. Badges have already been created to commemorate surviving this monumental shutdown. It’s been dubbed the Internet’s Library of Alexandria.

Maintenance was started due to a malicious attack on Archive of Our Own. This occurred right after they completed a charity drive. When AO3 returns from the war, I’m sure they’ll recommend that users change their passwords. It’s been nice to see people make posts reminding users that AO3 is run by volunteers who are trying their best. I think the best part is that I’ve personally only seen kind, supportive posts for the volunteers. I haven’t seen anyone genuinely angry about this shutdown. It’s frustrating, but fans are taking it in funny strides.

During Halloween weekend, X was full of readers responding to the news. Wattpad offered their support and was met with a resounding no. The competing fanfiction site even offered to remove ads for the weekend. Still, readers declined their offer in hilarious ways.

All fun and games stopped on Monday as readers and writers were made aware of downloaded fanfiction being reposted to Google Docs. A bit of a debate sparked on the ethics of re-uploading fanfiction. I know that a fan author does not own their fanfiction, but they put a lot of time and work into it. I don’t think it should be re-uploaded without their say-so. A now universally hated site called AO3 Life has been born from the chaos. They are re-uploading fanfiction behind a paywall and creating AI audiobooks. This is illegal. AO3 staff have stated they are aware and working on the situation. Writers should not give AO3 Life any personal information, even to submit a takedown request.

Some writers are returning to their roots, posting full-length fanfiction to Tumblr. I won’t lie, I’ve enjoyed seeing the extra posts on the site. Tumblr coming back in the big 2026? In a way, it’s brought fandoms together. I hope AO3 can feel the love from their fans during this difficult time. Is there a fanfiction you re-read that you’re missing?
